Ahmad underwent surgical debridement of
his infection site
Infected tissue was removed from his right sphenoid
sinus, and his sinus cavity was enlarged. A surgical
sample was taken, which showed evidence of fungal
hyphae. Further radical surgical debridement was
discussed with Ahmad's family, who did not consent.
Culture of the surgical tissue confirmed that
Ahmad had a Mucorales infection.
Ahmad's sensory perception deteriorated, and
a repeat MRI scan of his brain revealed lacunar
strokes in several regions of his brain. The right
internal carotid artery was completely blocked.
Treatment with Liposomal Amphotericin B
was continued.
